It is water. In a can. Sold with skulls, heavy-metal humour and the line "Murder Your Thirst". And in 2024 investors valued it at $1.4 billion.

The insight

Founder Mike Cessario, who came from a creative advertising background, noticed that healthy products were almost always marketed with the same soft, clean visual language, while the brands young people found cool were energy drinks and beers. What if water looked like a tallboy beer can and talked like a punk band?

The positioning

Liquid Death positioned water as entertainment. Aluminium cans supported a sustainability message ("Death to Plastic"), while the tone was irreverent, dark and very funny. Early distribution targeted bars, tattoo parlours and music venues as a lifestyle play.

The marketing

The brand behaved like an entertainment company: comedy videos, a heavy-metal album built from real hate comments it had received, a Super Bowl ad parodying alcohol advertising, merchandise and collaborations. Every launch was designed to be talked about.

The results

Retail distribution expanded to major chains including Whole Foods, 7-Eleven, Publix and Sprouts, and Live Nation venues. According to Wikipedia's summary of reporting, retail sales reached $263 million in 2023 and a 2024 funding round valued the company at $1.4 billion.

Why it worked

In a commodity category, the brand was the product. When the liquid is identical, the story, identity and community are what people pay for.

Lessons for brands in Dubai and the GCC

  1. In commodity categories, branding is the differentiation
  2. Borrow codes from unexpected categories
  3. Treat marketing as entertainment people choose to watch
  4. Turn criticism into content
