Food advertising has one rule: make it look delicious. Burger King broke it, on purpose, with a burger slowly rotting over 35 days.

The challenge

Burger King was removing artificial preservatives from the Whopper in key markets. "No artificial preservatives" is a claim every food brand makes, and audiences have learned to ignore it.

The idea

Instead of saying it, show it. A real Whopper filmed in time-lapse as it decays over 35 days, under the line "The beauty of no artificial preservatives". Mould becomes proof.

The execution

Created by agencies INGO and DAVID with Publicis, the campaign launched in 2020 across film, print and outdoor in multiple markets. The visuals were striking, unsettling and impossible to scroll past, which is exactly what made people talk.

The results

According to WPP's case study, the campaign generated 8.4 billion earned impressions and $40 million in earned media value, with a 14% sales increase and an 88% uplift in positive brand sentiment. It became one of the most awarded campaigns of its year, including a Grand Clio and Cannes Titanium recognition.

Why it worked

It dramatised a product truth in the most memorable way possible. A boring claim became a visual nobody could forget.

Lessons for brands in Dubai and the GCC

  1. Show the proof, do not just state the claim
  2. Breaking category conventions earns attention
  3. Bravery works when it is anchored in a real product truth
  4. Earned media can dwarf paid media when the idea is strong enough
