Technical SEO used to be a checklist you ran once. In 2026 it is the foundation for being found in two places at once: classic search results and AI-generated answers. If machines cannot crawl, render and understand your site, your content never gets a chance.
1. Speed is a ranking and revenue factor
Core Web Vitals still matter: Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift. The quick wins are almost always the same.
- Serve images in WebP or AVIF with explicit width and height
- Preload the hero image and lazy load everything below the fold
- Remove unused plugins, sliders and third-party scripts
- Use caching and compression at the server level
2. Crawlability and indexation
Check that every important page returns a 200 status, has one canonical URL, appears in your XML sitemap and is linked from at least one other page. Orphan pages are invisible pages. Redirect chains waste crawl budget and dilute signals, so collapse them into single 301s.
3. Structured data is now essential
Schema markup tells search engines and AI systems exactly what your page is about: a person, an organisation, an article, a product, an FAQ. In my experience it is the single most underused lever for AI visibility. At minimum, implement:
- Organization or Person schema with sameAs links to your social profiles
- Article or BlogPosting schema on every post
- FAQPage schema where you genuinely answer questions
- BreadcrumbList for site hierarchy
4. Decide how you treat AI crawlers
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended all respect robots.txt. Blocking them may protect content, but it also removes you from AI answers. For most service brands, allowing them is the better commercial decision. An llms.txt file that summarises your key facts is a simple, low-cost addition.
5. Architecture for topical authority
Group content into clusters: one pillar page per core topic, supported by detailed articles that link back to it. This helps Google understand expertise and helps AI models connect your brand to the topic.
6. Mobile first, really
In the UAE, the majority of browsing happens on phones. Test every template on a real mid-range Android device, not only on a desktop emulator. Tap targets, font sizes and pop-ups all affect both rankings and conversions.
The 30-minute audit
Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights, crawl the site with a free crawler, validate schema with the Rich Results Test and check Search Console coverage. Those four checks catch the majority of technical issues I see on Dubai business websites.
Rendering and JavaScript
Many modern websites rely on JavaScript to display content. Search engines can render JavaScript, but it costs them more time, and some AI crawlers read only the raw HTML. If your key content, headings and links only appear after scripts run, you risk being invisible to some systems. Server-side rendering or static HTML for important pages is the safest approach.
International and bilingual sites
UAE businesses often publish in English and Arabic. Use hreflang tags so search engines show the right language version, keep each language on its own URL, and translate meta titles and descriptions as well as body content. Right-to-left layouts need separate testing for layout shift and readability.
Internal linking is underrated
Internal links tell search engines which pages matter most. Link from high-traffic pages to the pages you want to rank, use descriptive anchor text, and make sure every new article links to its pillar page and at least two related articles. This is one of the cheapest SEO wins available.
Log files and crawl budget
For larger sites, server log analysis shows exactly which pages search engine bots visit and how often. If bots spend time on filter URLs, old campaign pages or duplicate parameters, block or consolidate them so crawl attention goes to pages that earn revenue.
Security and trust signals
HTTPS everywhere, no mixed content, a clear privacy policy, visible contact details and real author information all contribute to trust, both for users and for systems evaluating whether your content is reliable enough to show or cite.
Technical SEO maintenance calendar
- Weekly: check Search Console for new errors and sudden traffic drops
- Monthly: crawl the site for broken links, redirect chains and missing metadata
- Quarterly: review Core Web Vitals, schema validity and the sitemap
- Before every redesign: map every old URL to a new one and plan redirects
Technical SEO is not glamorous, but it is the difference between content that compounds and content nobody can find.
Frequently asked questions
Is technical SEO still important with AI search?
Yes. AI search systems rely on crawlable, fast, well-structured pages. Technical SEO is the entry ticket to both Google rankings and AI citations.
Should I block GPTBot and other AI crawlers?
Most service businesses benefit from allowing them, because blocking removes your brand from AI-generated answers. Publishers with paywalled content may decide differently.
